The Review
In the relatively short time that I’ve been reviewing books, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of reading and reviewing three of Jason F. Wright’s works, this being the third of them. The other two novels were Recovering Charles and The Wednesday Letters, both of which I truthfully enjoyed.
I would say that Wright is mostly likely best known for his novel Christmas Jars. The book, in fact, became so popular with the “Pay It Forward” spirit that many have had the unexpected gift arrive on their doorstep. In The Cross Gardener, Wright once again delivers a solid, inspirational story that his devoted readers are sure to appreciate.
What I find intriguing about Wright’s work, in general, is that each book that I’ve read has been distinguishable from the others that came before. In The Cross Gardener, the story reminded me of something that you Mitch Albom might pen. It delivered a spiritual life lesson to make you appreciate the time that you do have here on earth and those you are surrounded by. The simplicity of the message, yet the intricacy of the characters, setting, and storyline was the perfect mix… almost like reading God’s story, under a tree, on a calm Sunday afternoon and then suddenly a warm breeze brushes against you to remind you of his presence. Just peaceful, spiritual, goodness!
This is the story of a boy who was adopted by an apple farmer. He was raised on the orchard with his two brothers, both of whom were also adopted. He fell in love with his childhood sweetheart and eventually married her. After his father passed on, as an heir he became the operator of the farm. A father and family man himself, he learns important lessons about life, loss, and finding happiness again.
For those who have lost a love, a family member, or a friend too early. When the days together were just not enough, this book may be just what you need to read to remind you of what’s to come.
This is a novel that brings forth a sentimental story that I was easily able to make an emotional connection to. It must be said, however, that I’ve read similar types of novels before therefore I didn’t find it completely unique in its conception. With that being said, if you are looking for a spiritual/Christian novel with a solid message of hope and inspiration, I highly recommend it. It is a good book and, personally, I enjoyed it just as much as Wright’s two others that I’ve read before!
