2,028 firefighters are putting out a forest fire that has consumed 6,843 acres since Wednesday. They have the fire 50% contained and expect to have the fire fully extinguished by Thursday of this week. Governor Schwarzenegger has declared a “State of Emergency” as our state faces costs of over $5.2 Million. My prayers for today are for the firefighters and the animals of the forest. I pray for their safety.
Had my best friend, Jill, not call me from the very smokey Santa Cruz, I wouldn’t have known about the fire. I’ve been successfully avoiding television for the majority of the week. Looking back upon my week, I can’t tell you exactly where I’ve redirected my energies to… but, it hasn’t been cozying up on the couch and watching the good ole’ boob tube!
Today, the twins and I are going to try to hit the movie theatres. I’m not sure what we’re going to see… but I’m hoping for a hot shower, comfy sweats, and a big ole’ tub of buttered popcorn and a frosty root beer! Yes, the perfect late Sunday afternoon!
This Week’s Reads
This week, I reviewed:
In My Mailbox for Review
No new books this week… although, I did put in a request for the new Shelley Adina books in the It’s All About Us Series. Hachette said, “yes.” YIPPEE! I just love that series.
Contests
I’ve still got three active contests on the blog this week:
On TV
The Whale Wars
After watching this week’s episode of The Whale Wars, I was emotionally motivated to write this post: HERE.
More To Love
Are any of you out there watching this FOX television show? From the creators of The Bachelor/ette, they have developed this similar dating show, except the bachelor and his bevy of beauties are all “plus size.” First of all, I don’t consider a Size 14 “plus size.” The average American woman is in the range of a Size 12-14. The ladies all differ in sizes, some more voluptuous than others. I think that I like the concept of the show, but the show itself is a bit depressing. Every few minutes, somebody is crying. I understand that the tears may derive from a psychological pain that I cannot fully understand… however, it just makes the show more depressing than fun. Rather that the show displaying that love happens at any age, any size, any color, etc., we get an hour of tears over how traumatic their prom was… or how they’ve never been out on a “real date.” And, I have yet to turn the dial. I’m still mildly hooked.
Now, what I would like to see is The Bachelor/ette for love a second time around… people who are middle-aged and divorced. Of course, that’s most likely because I’m middle-aged and divorced… but, it would interest me! How do other people my age do it… with careers, families, etc.? That would be a dating show I would definitely want to watch!
The Rest…
I’m registered for school and got all of the classes that I need for completion of my accounting certification and my AA degree. I’ll be transferring to a state college in the spring to complete my BA. I’m taking 4 courses this fall and one of them is a biology lab… should be interesting.
The twins have enjoyed their week. They’ve visited with friends and family and have had more than their fair share of TV time. The menagerie is doing well… the pups were so fascinated today when a very green grasshopper came to visit our backyard. For many of you, this may be a totally normal sighting. However, in my city, this is not a bug that you see often. So, the pups and I sat in total fascination of this awesome bug… until Tori decided that she wanted to eat it! NOOOO, Tori! Good news… the grasshopper escaped and Tori didn’t get her daily dose of bugs today. Right now, she sleeps soundly at the foot of my chair.
The girls started soccer practice this week. I met a really nice “soccer mom” on the field this week. She’s the coach’s wife. Of course, she’s just as pretty as she is nice! I met her because she was reading Jane Green’s The Beach House. As I just reviewed it, I couldn’t help but to open my big fat mouth and start conversing about the book. While I met this super-cool chick, my twins got their soccer on! They are loving it. DeeDee is just exhibiting such a passion for it and is playing so aggressively. I took them out to the park to practice heading the ball earlier in the week. While we are at the park, I start off by leading them through some stretching exercises. This, of course, led them to all kinds of social embarrassment… all of which I do not understand. I mean, it’s 3 in the afternoon and we’re at the park. Why is stretching before you play soccer embarrassing? And, there were no other kids around… NONE. So, how this is embarrassing is beyond me. But, my girls are so long-limbed, tall and lanky that they are really not flexible at all! I hope to work with them over the next few months on their flexibility and core strength.
All of this exercise stuff happened just before I broke my pinky toe. I did this fabulous feat by opening a big heavy door right onto my little toe and the 4th toe. Totally stupid! I was entering the gas station, put my hand on the door and was starting to pull it open when this “Jerry Springer-ish” fight erupted to the side of me. As I turned my head in a true lookie-loo fashion, I lost concentration of what I was doing with the door… just yanked open the door onto my now-non-moving foot. DUMB! DUMB! DUMB!
Well, I have several posts to write and a book to finish… so, I’m off. I hope that y’all have a great Sunday and a terrific week!
As always, my thanks to all of you for reading not only this post, but the others as well. Your readership means the world to me! AND, your comments are invaluable to me!
P.S. There’s a fun little CONTEST over at Fizzy Thoughts. Check it out!

I’ve been watching More to Love but it’s been irritating me too… rather than showing how even though they’re “plus size” they’re just like everyone else in relationships, they have these girls who are always crying and who, on every date with him, complain to him about how no one likes them. I just feel like these girls are so desperate and it makes them so unattractive (when they’re all actually beautiful girls). And it makes them look bad to the viewing audience. I feel like they’re perpetuating the negative ways in which some people think about them.

I’m so excited for you that you’ll be finishing your AA this fall! When Vance was in his early teen years, he was embarrassed simply because I existed – like no one else on Earth had a mother but him. This phase will pass.

Kathy… I certainly hope so. This is ridiculous!
I’ve been through that accounting thing…taxation sucks! But when you have the degree, you will be incredibly marketable. You can do this!
I’ve always thought that California had it all…beautiful weather, wine country, a coastline to die for. But apparently there is a price to pay for all that because there is definitely a share of acts of God over there. Fires, mudslides, earthquakes, etc. I still wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to live there!

Thanks for visiting my Salon today =) I like looking at the stats and the off-the-wall keywords too. And I had fun with my video too, wanted to do something different then the others.

Our tv’s have been stuck on cartoons for a year so I didn’t get to hear about the fires, I do hope they fizzle out soon.
Otherwise, just trying to stay sane over here, and school starts in a freaking week. My Goodness.

I think it’s awesome that you will have your degree soon. It’s hard being a mom and going to school at the same time.
I am so sorry about your pinky toe but I chuckled over how it happened. I would have done the same thing had a Jerry Springer like fight been going on right next to me.

Okay, first… I am joining you in prayer for the safety of all involved in fighting this fire.
More to Love – I am hooked. I think that it can be a bit depressing, but in a lot of ways it is just a sign of how inexperienced some of these girls are when it comes to dating. One HUGE dating rule is to not delve into your dating history, and boy if that one hasn’t been broken dozens of times! The first thing that I remember clearly is one girl talking to the camera about being cheated on because she was over weight, and I wanted to tell her “Hell no! You were cheated on because the guy was a jerk!” My heart really goes out to some of these girls because honestly, I do not think some of them have ever been treated nicely before if noticed at all by a nice guy. I just want to see the catty broads go. I have never enjoyed that side of these dating shows.
I think a good second time around dating show would be great.
I am very sorry about your toe. Be careful with that. My husband broke his a few weeks ago, and I swear that he continuously hit it afterward. It was like his baby toe became a magnet for every door and corner around!
Good luck with school this semester!

Prayers for all of the people involved with the fires in Santa Cruz, the firefighters, anyone whose home is in jeopardy and last but not at all least, all of the animals of the forest. I could cry for them. I hope they survive and then thrive wherever they end up.
I have only seen bits and pieces of episodes of More to Love. I think the show’s concept is great. Most women are not the size 2 of the Bachelorette women, they are a normal size 12-14. I agree with you Sheri that size 12 -14 is not “plus size” it’s just average. And the women on the show are smaller than they appear because the camera does add extra weight to a person. But I noticed, as you said, that there’s a lot of crying on this show. We all have traumatic episodes from growing up but many of these women can’t seem to let go of them. I wonder if, despite what they say, many of these women suffer from self-esteem issues and are very self-conscious which will cause a lot of stress for them. Instead of seeing this as a great opportunity to meet a good guy, maybe the “right” guy and/ or get some exposure, they end up feeling badly about themselves. I don’t know! But I found the show depressing and lacking in fun.
You read some great books this week! Everyone of them is on my TBR list! I think starting a conversation with the mom at the twins soccer practice about the book she’s reading is a great way to break the ice and meet someone, especially when you just reviewed the book!
The twins sound adorable! Good luck to them with soccer.
I hope your toe feels better soon. Your story about how you broke it cracked me up (jerry-springer-ish fight! Bah! lol!) but I’m sorry you broke your toe.
I hope you have a good week!

Dogs and bugs are too funny. Good thing she didn’t get it though as ours always vomit up the grasshoppers. Blech!
I love meeting cool new people that you are guaranteed to see again and agin (at least as long as the season lasts). And to meet someone who reads is just icing on the cake.

Prayers for those involved in the fire. We have a pretty serious one raging in BC here and it’s devastating. I feel so sorry for the people losing their homes and all that land and animals. It’s so sad.
I think it’s awesome about having your degree soon. You go girl! I be the twins outgrow being embarassed. It’s just the age although I have to say my mom can still do a bang up job of embarassing me when she decides to let loose.
I was watching More to Love but it started to bug me. Reason being I would have liked to have seen confident bigger women on the show not ones desperate for someone to love them if that makes sense. I’m heavier and I’d love to be thinner but at the same time I don’t think I’m unworthy because I’m bigger now. I don’t know. Maybe the show has changed but that’s the impression I got in the beginning so I gave up on watching it. I’m watching So You Think YOu Can Dance Canada now.
Ouch on the pinkie toe. Hope it heals up fast. That hurts big time. Have a great week Sheri!

I’m officially on vacation from the computer this week, but I just had to “cheat” and drop by to read your Sunday Salon post.
