The Score: The Platters

Welcome to “The Score,” A Novel Menagerie’s weekly music feature. Each Thursday, I will share an artist and a song that I favor. Thereafter, the song will be available to you in my sidebar widget until the following week’s selection.
I welcome your suggestions for future artist spotlights.

This week, I am highlighting a group that I’ve loved since my daddy introduced me to the greatness that is the music of the 50′s… The Platters!
My favorite song by The Platters is ”Smoke Gets In Your Eyes,” although I completely love “Only You” and “The Great Pretender.” One of my favorite movies is Always with Holly Hunter (“Dorinda”) and Richard Dryfus (“Pete”). In the movie, there is a scene in which Pete buys Dorinda a beautiful white dress for her birthday. All of the firemen in the bar wash up as quickly as possible so that they can have a chance to dance ”with the dress.” ”Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” was their song and I can’t help thinking of the great romance of this movie when I hear this song.
All movie memories aside, the simple lyrics of this song just strike a chord with me. The lyrics to this song are timeless and I really enjoy the classic music and romantic vocals of this song.
Just press play in The Score Music Player and Enjoy! (I’ve included all three songs in case you’re in the mood…)
Here is the Music Player. You need to installl flash player to show this cool thing!
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be deniedThey said someday you’ll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart’s on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyesSo I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes

Oh I love them too! I am also a big Drifters fan. “Save the Last Dance for Me” is one of my favorites. Thanks for the post!

Oh, this is such a beautiful song. My mom & I are sitting here w/ tears in our eyes. I am 31 & remember listening to this w/ my gramps as a kid. Thank you for the incredible memory of a time my heart treasures. The anniversary of his death is this month. Sheri, thank you for allowing me to remember the good.

I think of this song as the “Always” song too.
It’s been one of my favorites for a long time, but especially since watching the movie.

I have heard these songs before and I have always liked “Smoke gets in your eyes” – there’s just something about this song that just makes me melancholy but strangely delighted at the same time
