Thanks so much for posting this. I hate what we do to animals. I'm sure you are doing a good thing by bringing it to people's attention!

This makes me so sad!!! I hadn't really heard about this issue, but you can bet that I am always on the side of the animal. I am a peaceful soul, and hate confrontation, but if I were more combative, I would probably be one of those people that picket for animal rights.

When I lived out in WA state, the Native Americans there fought for their right to begin whaling again. Not for the sustenance of their tribe. The fact is that most of the tribe probably wouldn't even like the taste of whale meat, never having had it before. They wanted to kill whales to try to "heal" the tribe, to save their youth. They won.

So in the spring of 1999, they were going out on the water everyday to try and get a whale. They were doing it in a more traditional way, with the tribe in small boats instead of giant whaling ship and harpoon gun.

For several days the weather was deemed to dreary and rainy to hunt whale. One day an employee at my workplace came inside and complained what a dreary day it was. I told them, "Yes! Isn't it beautiful?!" They were a little confused by my positive reaction to the dreary weather. However once I explained the situation and that a whale was being saved by the dreary weather, they agreed: "It is a beautiful day!"

Unfortunately the sun eventually came out, and they got their whale. The whale basically came right up to their boat. After decades free from whaling, they had become quite tame. It sickened me.

I am not familiar with this topic, but the death sounds horrible. My son showed me an article this morning about people using dogs and cats as bait for shark fishing. It made me sick to my stomach.
