Monday’s Movie: Pride & Prejudice

I invite everybody to participate in the weekly MEME and write about any movies, television or big screen, that you’ve seen over the past week and write about it.  Please feel free to use the above logo photo in your post and/or link back to the site.  I will post every Sunday Night or Monday Morning on the movie I’ve seen from the past week.  I’m hoping that there are other movie buffs out there who will enjoy the MEME as much as I’m hoping to!  The only small request that I have is that you rate the movie out of 5 bags of popcorn (so, 1 bag out of 5, 2 bags out of 5, and so on).

ppMovie:  Pride & Prejudice

Starring:  Keira Knightley,  Talulah Riley, Rosamund Pike, Jena Malone, Carey Mulligan, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, Simon Woods, Kelly Reilly, Matthew Macfadyen, Rupert Friend, Tom Hollander, Judi Dench

Genre:  Drama

Runtime: 127 Minutes

MPAA Rating:  PG

Directed By: Joe Wright

As soon as I finished the book, I borrowed a copy of this movie from my friend Danielle.  The weird thing is that I was just talking to my friend Lori about the movie and she loved loved loved it.  However, Lori hasn’t read the book and Danielle has.  It’s interesting that they both love the movie equally, read or no-read.

And, I just read the book and was surprised how much I loved it.  My book review is HERE.

But, this is my movie review.  First off, I wasn’t thrilled with the casting except for Mr. Bennet, Mr. Darcy, Mrs. Bennet, Catherine, Mary, and Lydia.  For the rest of them, I want a re-cast!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE Keira Knightley, however I didn’t think she was right for Lizzy.  I never pictured Jane being blonde and fair like that.  Mr. Collins was entirely too short… I wanted a chubbier Mr. Collins.  Mr. Bingley wasn’t nearly as handsome as I expected.

Despite my boo-hooing on the looks of the cast, they all did a fantastic acting job!  Perhaps if I’d never read the book and formed these characters in my mind, I would have just loved the movie cast as it is.  However, I’m just so emotionally connected to the characters after reading the book that I was rather opinionated about their appearances.

Onto Keira Knightley in the role of Lizzy.  What I didn’t care for was all of the smiling and “coy-ish-ness” that she kept putting out there.  In my opinion, Lizzy wasn’t the flirt that Keira portrayed her as.  Lizzy was more able to stand up for herself and mr-darcyI just didn’t see her with all of that nonsense that she puts out in this movie.  But, that is my interpretation of Lizzy and maybe other women have different views of her.  That’s the coolest thing about this story!

I loved loved loved Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet and thought he was perfectly cast!   I also rather enjoyed this Mr. Darcy… especially his legs.  I don’t know how Lizzy could have ever turned down this Mr. Darcy!  The scene in the rain is my absolute favorite of the movie and very memorable.  I just like the way that Mr. Darcy loves her!

I must admit that I am dying to see the one with Colin Firth.  Got to get my hands on that one!

Overall, this movie was a wonderful love story and strong drama.   I would recommend it despite my opinions about the casting.  Out of 5 bags of popcorn, genre drama (classics)… I give this:

For all of you who posted a Monday’s Movie post last week, please feel free to add them to Mr. Linky this week.  I, unfortunately, had to switch readers for the blogs I subscribe to and have lost the posts.  Thanks!

Please add your reviews into Mr. Linky!

I haven’t seen this version. When I finished the book, my blogging buds told me the Colin Firth version was the one to see, so that is what I ordered from Netflix. Just for comparisons, I should see this one too!

While I enjoyed this movie, it does not approach the awesomeness that is the Colin Firth (BBC/A&E) version. That one is six hours of pure Austen and IMO, brilliantly cast. I think if this version had been the first I saw, I would have liked it more. You’ll see! =)

I agree wholeheartedly with Meghan. If you want to watch a great Pride & Prejudice adaptation, the BBC mini-series is definitely the way to go. In fact, it is really good that you watched the Keira Knightley version first, because the BBC version totally ruined it for me. Once you’ve seen the BBC version, there is no going back! :)

I agree Mr. Bennet was well cast. I see your point about Keira’s portrayal of Lizzy, but I think she did a good job overall. I really love this movie…and this Mr. Darcy can make me swoon every time. How she could turn him down is beyond me.

OK so tell me what to do..
I have the book, have not read it though.
    What should I do first?
    Should I read it first?
Should I watch the Knightly P&P first?
Should I watch the Colin Firth P&P first?

I like this version well enough even though I have issues with quite a few things in it. But oh…my…gosh! Watch the BBC/A&E miniseries with Colin Firth! That one totally blows this one out of the water!

Marie, I’d suggest you read it first but then again, I always prefer to read the book before watching movie adaptations. As for the movie and the miniseries? I watched the one with Colin Firth first and then the one with Knightly. I was disappointed with the Knightly one(which I expected) because nothing can stand up to the Firth one, IMO.

I suppose I should read the book first…so maybe I should pick that up and take it with me on vacation. I have avoided watching this and the other versions because I want to read the book. I appreciate your review, and I can’t wait to compare my own opinion with yours. :) Have a great week!

I enjoyed this version, although my favorite of the movies will always be the BBC/A&E version. I love the story–I don’t often like straight romance novels, but there’s just something about Jane Austen’s books that always win me over.

This is one of my favorite books and one of my favorite movies! I love, love, love Kiera Knightly as Lizzy. But I think Colin Firth made a better Darcy. Just my opinion.
