The Story

“Best friends since childhood, the sexual tension between April and Oliver has always been palpable. Years after being completely inseparable, they become strangers, but the wildly different paths of their lives cross once again with the sudden death of April’s brother. Oliver, the responsible, newly engaged law student finds himself drawn more than ever to the reckless, mystifying April – and cracks begin to appear in his carefully constructed life. Even as Oliver attempts to “save” his childhood friend from her grief, her menacing boyfriend and herself, it soon becomes apparent that Oliver has some secrets of his own–secrets he hasn’t shared with anyone, even his fiancé. But April knows, and her reappearance in his life derails him. Is it really April’s life that is unraveling, or is it his own? The answer awaits at the end of a downward spiral…towards salvation.

The Review

tessHow a mother of twins had time to write this novel is BEYOND ME!  This book came recommended based upon my reaction to Follow Me.  This novel is similar in the way that there is a sadness that shadows its main characters and you realize that it is only within their grasp for them to move out of the shadows and into the light.  Both April and Oliver need a transformation.  They need to accept their truths.  But, sometimes the “broken” take a much longer road to finding self-acceptance or self-love.  April and Oliver cannot deny the truths within them just as they cannot deny the air they breathe.  Everybody can see them, but they just can’t see to see themselves.

I found myself completely engrossed in this read.  The character development was excellent and the storyline kept me engaged the entire time.  I can relate to characters like April and Oliver.  The way they think makes sense to me and I can feel for them in such a way that their hardship is part of their beauty.  Callahan did a fantastic job with the surrounding characters Al, Nana, Bernadette, and T.J.   Each of them I see in my mind’s eye as clear as day.

The book is being released on June 3rd.  For the price of $16.31 for a hardcover edition of this book, I highly recommend that you pre-order this book from Amazon.com.  This book will be on my “Best of 2009″ List for many reasons.  The story is sad, yet hopeful and it ended just the way that it should have.

On Sher’s “Out of Ten Scale:”

anm-logo-for-approved-books-post-sizeI’ve learned a lot lately about how absolutely subjective reading is.  Two people will read this book and not walk away with the same impression of it.  Words of a well written book truly are art.  When an author is able to tell a story in such a way that you feel connected to the characters and you find yourself caring about their outcome, then the author has done his/her job.  Callahan did her job well with April & Oliver.  For me, a GREAT LOVER OF FICTION, there is nothing greater for me than a story that sweeps me away into another world.  April & Oliver has done that for me.

In my opinion, Tess Callahan wrote a poignant, heartbreaking tale of redemption that I will rate, in the genre: Fiction, a 10 OUT OF 10.   I highly recommend this novel to book clubs as it will promote A GREAT BOOK CLUB discussion.

My heartfelt thanks to Miriam and Hachette for this amazing read.

True Love? I never truly knew what that was until I met Paul. In all honesty I always chose the bad guy, the one who was physically and mentally abusive – for years I couldn’t break the cycle. Just as I was about to concede to a life of being alone, Paul came into my life. He taught me love wasn’t about a fist or control. Love was being there when life got rough and weathering the storms together. A year after I met Paul I went completely deaf…he never abandoned me and stayed helping me find strength in the silence. June 25th marks the 6th year since we met and yes, we’re still together and still in love.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

This was a great review Sheri! I like many of the same books you do so your opinions mean a lot.

I spotted my true love our junior year of high school. He had just moved to our town and we had some classes together. (We played husband and wife in a play in English class) The first time I saw him in the hallway I told my friend he was handsome and I was going to have him for my boyfriend. I succeeded and after we went out for almost 6 years we married. That was almost 23 years, and our 3 teenage children ago. We’ve weathered some very tough times but he has been my rock and I love him more today than ever. Thanks for your contest!

I loved my husband (now divorced) dearly. However I think that your “true love” is someone you are good with, “meant to be together”. My husband and I loved one another, but we were not good together, so therefore I guess he wasn’t my “true love”. But he’s the closest I come to it yet.

My true love is my husband. My “first love” was only that, and of course does not compare to what I found with my husband. I think it differs depending on the people – some are lucky enough to find their true love in their first love, and some are lucky to experience something that isn’t right to be able to value their true love when they find it!

    Hi!
I was reffered by Suzana – this looks like a kind of book I would enjoy, so please count me in.
I won’t hurt much talking about my “true” love. It wasn’t the first- it was the second actually. I was 17, we split up after 16 months, but when I dream (literally!), he is the guy I dream of. I’m married and I love my husband. Still, same dream for the last 15 years.

Good Lord, I am number 99? Are you kidding? Sigh. Oh well. I do want this book, pretty please! I have just signed up to follow you, and so far it has been fun! My true love? Definitely not my first love, that was doomed from the beginning. It IS hard to ever capture the feeling of a first love ever again. My true love is the one I married seventeen years ago and had two kids with, and we are still together. Sitting here talking about it, I guess it is important to remind myself this, because you do get wrapped up in work, the kids, the blog, whatever. OK, then I will cross my fingers at some serious lotto-ish luck at winner this book!

My first love and I had a whirlwind romance when we were young but did not work out once we went away to college. He happens to be my brothers best friend and its still difficult after all these years for us to be friends.

I just posted about the give-away on my blog. You can find it here:
    http://pageafterpage-kim.blogspot.com/2009/05/another-one.html

Also, I forgot in my last comment to talk about my true love, so I will here instead:

My husband is my true love. I only had 2 other boyfriends in high-school/college, but they could never make me forget Kerry, who I had met during early high-school. He was an intern at my church ( 6 years older than me) and I had the biggest crush on him! He, to this day, teases me about how I would bat my eyes at him! We have been married 26.5 years, have 4 children together, and are just about to walk through the doorway of grandparentdom. He knows me better than anyone and we love each other more now than 26 years ago!

I would love to win this book. I follow you on twitter and I tweeted your blog at ccqdesigns. I met my true love about 20 years ago, but the timing was wrong for both of us. We were together for two years, then had to part. It took me 5 years to stop thinking about him every day and I still look for him in every airport, on every trip. I am happily married now and have been for many years, but my true love is out there somewhere, still.
