DWTS: More Rise and Fall Than a Bride’s Nightie…

CLOTHING ON EDYTA… WHAT A CONCEPT!
TAKING THE RAUNCH OUT OF LIL’ KIM IS LIKE HAVING A MARGARITA WITHOUT THE TEQUILLA? PAAAHHLEASE!
SHAWN’S A P.Y.T.!
60′s-A-GO-GO
Steve-O is gone and unfortunately he takes Lacy with him. Bummer. But, tonight looks to be a promising one with the stars’ involvement in the costume design for their partners. There is also a group number based on the 60′s groove at the end of the show.
Here’s my nagging and praising for this week’s couples:

- Ty Murray and Chelsie Hightower
If you’ve been reading my weekly updates, you know that there’s a sweet spot in my heart for this couple. They’ve been floundering for the past couple of weeks, but tonight they were back atop of their game. Thankfully, they got the waltz and Ty professed that he was “good at holdin’ onto things.” I guess you’ve got to be if you’re a bull rider! I just adore Chelsie, she’s so sweet. Her dress was very pretty this week and she just glowed on the dance floor. Their waltz was lovely and Len said that it had “more rise and fall than a ???’s nightie.” I replayed it 3 times and I still can’t understand what he said. I suppose I wasn’t the only one; thank goodness Tom Bergeron translated it for us…. “there was more rise and fall than a bride’s nightie.” Oh. Good one, Len. I hope their scores are enough to keep them in the game. Scores: 8-8-8

- Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas
MY FAVORITE OF THE NIGHT! For their Cha-Cha-Cha, they danced to Michael Jackson’s P.Y.T. (perfect!). Mark wore a typical 80′s MJ outfit, but their dance routine wasn’t too “copy-cat.” They performed a fantastic cha-cha-cha while including some cool, funky moves. Shawn’s dress was beautiful and she looked wonderful. I rewinded it and watched it twice. The duo received a standing ovation and I clapped aloud for them. I wanted 3 tens! Go, Shawn, Go! Scores: 9-9-10. (Come on Carrie Ann & Len!)

- Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovalani
This couple got the Argentine Tango. Apparently Melissa has bruised ribs from rehearsal, although I never knew it until I saw her nearly in tears after the performance. I couldn’t discern whether the pending tears were from physical pain or just the emotional wake from the dance. Viewers soon learned it was the physical injury. I CANNOT BELIEVE that she performed that dance with such amazing lifts and extensions with that type of injury. She is a class act! I’ll tell you what… every other star moans and groans about their issues in the rehearsal tape. Not Melissa! She just went out there and did her best and it showed. I watched this dance of precision and passion and I have to tell you, I’m not sure what the heck Len Goodman was talking about when he mentioned the “small blunder” in the routine. Neither did Melissa. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I believe that the judges do not fairly judge Melissa against the other contestants. If either Kim or Shawn would have performed to this level, I can guarantee you that she would earn higher marks. I am not pleased with Len on his score! Scores: 10-9-10. It should have been a solid 30! Boo Len Boo!

- Lil’ Kim and Derek Hough
First Kim starts out in the rehearsal video trying to put on her “I AM SEXY” act. She wiggles about moaning “Aye Karumba… purrrr.” (Ugh.) Derek then continues to stress out for the remaining minutes of the rehearsal tape about the choreography. (Yawn.) Derek attempts to tone down Kim (good idea), but it results in a rather stiff and posed routine. Carrie Ann is disappointed because she’s holding back, Len is pleased however encourages her not to change just for him, and Bruno goes on and on about margaritas, urging Kim to bring back her raunchiness. (No, please, not that.) Didn’t we get enough of that in the rehearsal tape to last us a lifetime? (Golden Rule. Golden Rule. Golden Rule.) The dance was alright, but it didn’t hold a candle to Melissa’s and Shawn’s Rumbas last week. However, she is a favorite amongst the judges (and, apparently my sister-in-law)… it may be just me who isn’t dazzled. Scores: 9-8-9 (Note on the side: her make-up artist should be fired! She looked like a rag doll with gobs of hot pink and purple chalked all over her face. Even Cole agreed!)

- Lawrence Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska
If Lawrence Taylor isn’t a great dancer, then at least he can add to his glorious resume that he’s a distinguished dress designer! I’ve NEVER seen Edyta look so beautiful, EVER! It just goes to show that you don’t have to expose 2/3rds of your body to get attention! At home we gasped when he removed her cover to reveal the dress as the audience applauded. Their waltz had some timing issues and a few mis-steps that caused a decline in their scores, but I enjoyed their dance very much. You could see that Lawrence was always one to two counts behind Edyta as she posed awaiting his hold and direction. Edyta got a bit tangled in her dress and blamed it on too much material. I couldn’t disagree more… it was nice seeing her without the Clydesdale Legwarmers. Even still, with all of the minor “boo-boos,” I enjoyed the romance of the story. Scores: 7-7-7.

- Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke
“I want to sleep, sleep, sleep…” Yeah, this Viennese Waltz put me in a bit of a trance. I’m not sure that I liked Gilles’ dress design for Cheryl. She looked a bit like Belle from Disney’s The Beauty and The Beast. The dance was technically good, but it just didn’t draw me in like some of their other dances have. Don’t get me wrong, it was very good… just lulling. Scores: 9-9-9.

- Chuck Wicks and Julianne Hough
They hope Alabama will save them, but I think that their judges scores will. My daughter, Cole, LOVED the dance and I liked it. My other daughter, Dee, thought “it was okay.” The outfit that Chuck wore, all red silk, was a bit much for me. I would have dressed him in black pants. But, at least he had some butt and hip action this week and his technique had markedly improved. Scores: 9-9-9
The 60′s Group Dance was cool. I think they did a much better job than some of the other group dances that I’ve seen in seasons past. Chuck in his blonde wig got several remarks. I liked the rehearsal tape when Mark came to rehearsal, sans Shawn, with a cardboard cut-out of her. All of their costumes were great and it was an overall fun number. It didn’t seem, however, that Lawrence enjoyed it too much.

My favorites this week were Melissa and Shawn. Before last night, I really though Ty would be the next to go, but afterward, I think it’s going to be Lawrence.

I was so proud of Shawn and Mark. She had a really rough week and came out with a really great dance. I really love these two and hope they win. I agree with the above poster that Lawrence probably is going home.

I loved your little commentary on the show. I used to watch but gave it up last season–I guess just wasn’t all that interested in the contestants (plus it irks me that shows take up 2-3 nights). My favorite season was with Julianne and Apolo. What a hot hot hot couple! Off to go Youtube it.

There were a lot of exceptional dances tonight. Your commentary is right on Sheri. Well, except you forgot to mention that Chuck was HOT!! Seriously I loved Chuck, Shawn (she was so awesome), Melissa and Ty. Lil Kim’s dance was scored way too high. Gilles lacked flavor(it pains me to say it). And Lawrence looks like he’s given up. Did anyone else see the size of Ty’s biceps during the group dance? HOLY COW!!! Bowling balls people. Huge!
There is something messed up with your comments field Sheri. It’s extra wide.

Love keeping up with your Dancing with the Stars….(as well as your book reviews). As one who has been trying to learn the Argentine tango for months, I was FLOORED by Melissa’s difficulty and precision. She is, as you say, a class act.

Great commentary! I agree with you that the judges tend to treat Melissa like a second-class citizen because she’s not a big “celebrity.” I’ve noticed that from the beginning.
For some reason, I just can’t warm up to Shawn or Ty. Like Yasmin, I’m pulling for Melissa or Gilles, preferably Gilles because he is not only a good dancer, but also seems very humble and sweet.
Please keep up these follow-ups – they’re fun!
