I invite everybody to participate in the weekly MEME and write about any movies, television or big screen, that you’ve seen over the past week and write about it.  Please feel free to use the above logo photo in your post and/or link back to the site.  I will post every Sunday Night or Monday Morning on the movie I’ve seen from the past week.  I’m hoping that there are other movie buffs out there who will enjoy the MEME as much as I’m hoping to!  The only small request that I have is that you rate the movie out of 5 bags of popcorn (so, 1 bag out of 5, 2 bags out of 5, and so on).

journey-pictureMovie:  Journey To The Center of The Earth (3D)

Starring:  Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson, Anita Briem

Genre:  Action, Adventure, Family

Runtime: 93 Minutes

MPAA Rating:  PG

Directed By: Eric Brevig

We rented the video from cable, so we didn’t get the 3-D benefit of this movie.  However, in watching the it, I can say that I bet it was SOOOO COOL in 3-D.  Here’s the thing… I am a HUGE BABY when it comes to action/adventure/scary movies.  This movie is, by no means, scary and is totally appropriate for family watching.  But me… the big baby… jumped at the “scary” parts.  My children shake their heads in disgust.

The writing and acting in this movie is not fantastic and the storyline was not very realistic.  But, the OVERALL movie was a fun-for-family watch.  It kind of reminded me of the National Treasure movies with Nick Cage.  Not a ton of substance, but good family adventure.

I’ve never read this book and am curious about it, just a bit, from watching the movie.  I would love to hear if you’ve read it and what you thought of it.

Another observation… the casting was off in this movie for me.  The woman/girl seemed MUCH too young for Brendan Fraser as a love interest.  Next time, get an older starlett or get a younger professor!

So, listen… if you’ve got kids (I’d say Ages 7-14), I’d rather watch this than some of the other movies I’ve had to sit through that bored me to tears!  As a parent, it was watchable and the sea monsters, piranas, man-eating plants, and dinosaurs were “scary” for me!  Out of 5 bags of popcorn, genre drama… I give this:

Put up a review of Monsters vs Aliens though just realised I spelt it Mosters vs Alients. Doh

Great review of Journey to the Center of the Earth. I agree with your comments; the writing was not great but it was still tonnes of fun. I wish I had seen it in 3D as well as I think it would have been much better.

I think we felt the same way about this one. A good family movie but not the greatest. Especially since we didn’t see it in 3d either…that would have been awesome!

We actually saw this in 3D at the theater. It was fun but not overwhelmingly amazing.

I also read the book last year (we tried to get it finished before the movie came out- I read it out loud to my son- but it was summer, and he was outside with his friends all the time, so our reading time diminished greatly). There were a few huge differences, and I would’ve enjoyed a movie version of the book more (rather than just a current Dad uses Jules Verne’s novel as a guidebook for his own wacky adventures story), but it was fun and my son enjoyed the movie. He also enjoyed the book, though, and he’s still talking about it. :)

I just brought this home from the library for my teens and I didn’t even know it was in 3D. I guess I need to pay more attention. They haven’t watched it yet but probably will eventually. if you’re comparing it to National Treasure than I’ll probably like it too. That may not be a film classic but it’s always fun to watch. Thanks for your review!

My friends and I watched this movie with the benefit of a cocktail or two, and it was thoroughly hilarious – we spent much of the time going “ACK! It’s coming right for us!”… even though we didn’t have 3D glasses. :-D

I want to see the original and read the book too before I watch this one. I’m a little wary of this particular one though I’ve heard good things.
