I truly believe that the only reason that this book is an "adult" vs "YA" is because the main character is 21 instead of in her teens like Bella is. Nothing to strong or sexual in nature occurs throughout the whole book (a few kissing scenes and that's about it). The content is a bit tough since it basically is the end of the world as we know it, but if she/you can deal with that then yes, a 12 year old can definitely read it.
