Sheri, I am no expert, but when I worked for the booksellers (QBD), I asked similiar questions.

Mass market books are those that are produced in the cheaper format… the ones that are just standard paperback. Not sure if something else is meant for ‘mass-market fiction’.

Ebay is good to check for book categories, they way they have it set up. Religious non-fiction show up under ‘non-fiction’ first.

Not sure if that helps. I just wanted to give it a shot :)

Amanda is on the right track—trade paperbacks are the nice, bigger paperback editions that usually come a year or so after the initial hardback release of a book. If a book sells well enough in the trade paperback format, it is then published in mass-market, which is best described as the short, fat, airport books. Think James Patterson and the like.

I’m not sure exactly how the NYT does things, but I think a religious self-help book would fall under Advice, while a religious history/reference/biography/etc would fall under Non-Fiction. Just my best guess.

Looks like you got some good answers. I think Rebecca answered them both very well.

Trade paperbacks are for people who carry large purses; mass market paperbacks are for those who prefer to stick their book in their jacket pocket. :)

I am only answering this…my husband loved The Shack and it was not his normal read. :) Now tell me…why you didn’t want to be Betty Davis? I’ll have to look her up. She seems to be one of the most interesting of all! :) Have a good night!

I was going to answer the trade vs. mass market paperback question but I see that’s already been done. I love trade paperbacks, mass market paperbacks, not so much.

I have not read The Shack but since it’s our February book club selection, I’ll be reading it soon!

This is my first visit to your blog. WOW! There is so much here I hardly know where to start.

I don’t know if I’d say I loved The Shack but I liked it alot. I do have some major issues with the theology but it made me think and it made me cry. What more could I ask from a book?
