Monday’s Movie: Movie Awards – 2009 To See
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
I invite everybody to participate in the weekly MEME and write about any movies, television or big screen, that you’ve seen over the past week and write about it. Please feel free to use the above logo photo in your post and/or link back to the site. I will post every Sunday Night or Monday Morning on the movie I’ve seen from the past week. I’m hoping that there are other movie buffs out there who will enjoy the MEME as much as I’m hoping to! The only small request that I have is that you rate the movie out of 5 bags of popcorn (so, 1 bag out of 5, 2 bags out of 5, and so on).

- Best Supporting Actress: The Reader AND Best Actress: Revolutionary Road
I am admittingly stepping out of format on today’s post and am writing about the Golden Globe Awards. Afterall, it is MOVIE AWARDS SEASON and it pertains to The Big Screen. For many of us, it sways us to see movies we wouldn’t have normally otherwise seen. So, after watching the red carpet special and the entire show, I’ve decided that I’ve now got a “TO WATCH” list. This list will include movies that I will review over the next couple of months. I made my list based on the following events at the Golden Globes Awards (plus some other stuff, too):
The Reader I have to admit, I love Kate Winslet…. just love her. Her performance in Little Children was awesome, but then again I loved both the book and the movie. I just finished reading this book and CANNOT wait to see the movie. I’m crossing my fingers for a viewing this week.
Revolutionary Road Oh, Kate Kate Kate… and, with Leo. I have to hurry up and check this book out from the library and get it read before I see the movie.

- Slum Dog Millionaire Cast, Director, Producer, etc.
Slum Dog Millionaire What this movie is about is beyond me, although it did appear that it has something to do with the show “Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.” They won several Golden Globes including best picture, drama. Now I’m so curious that it’s on the list.
The Wrestler I actually saw Marissa Tomei on the Ellen Degeneres show this week. Man, can that girl hula hoop! Anyway, I’m very intrigued to watch her in the role as an “older” night club stripper. She’s received two nominations for the part. Then, to watch Mickey Rourke get the award for Best Actor: Drama…. WHAT? The guy is so “tore up from the floor up” and I always get a kick out of reading Perez Hilton’s digs at him. But, he’s just been
a train-wreck forever now and I haven’t liked anything he’s done since 9 1/2 Weeks. If you are under 35, don’t even bother watching it… it was a big thing at the time it came out, but now with media as different as it is from (gulp) 20 years ago, it just doesn’t have the same impact. OK, so back to The Wrestler… Mickey’s speech encompassed how difficult it was for him to get cast in the film, how the money wasn’t there, how he talked Bruce Springsteen into the theme song, how his agent got a ticket out of the mailroom by rescuing Rourke’s “career”…. I mean, the story just goes on and on. But, he nearly fell on the stairs on the way up and I can’t tell if he’s clean and sober or not. He had his hands in his pants in the acceptance speech. It was a bit weird.
There were some other notable winners that you can check out on line. A quick recap:
Best TV Show Comedy/Musical: 30 Rock Best Actress TV Comedy/Musical: Tina Fey Best Actor TV Comedy/Musical: Alec Baldwin Several Awards for the HBO Show John Adams including Best Actor and Best Actress Drama TV Best Comedy/Musical Movie: Vicky Christina Barcelona – WHAT? O.K., move on. Sally Hawkins for Best Actress Movie Comedy/Musical: Happy Go Lucky – Huh? Colin Farrell for Best Actor Movie Comedy/Musical: In Bruges – Never heard of it. Wall-E won for best animated movie Heath Ledger won for Best Supporting Actor Movie-Drama for The Dark Knight – I was to scared to see it… I’m kinda a big baby. I never even saw Silence of the Lambs because I was too scared.
It was kinda interesting watching Ricky Gevaris giving his introduction while crusin’ with a beer in hand. And, all of the television shots of the people at their tables, you can see they were all with champagne and eating dinner. Throughout the show, you could hear them clicking their forks on their plates… it made me hungry! I wanted The Office (my favorite comedy TV show) to win, but NO… 30 Rock took it all. It must be a good show. OH! By the way! Tina Fey’s acceptance speech was so hysterical! She starts off by saying that it has been the most incredible year of her life, yada yada. But, if you ever want to ruin feeling great about yourself and the wonderful year that you are having, you can always go to the internet to drag you back down. Then, she proceeds to thank the internet bloggers/commenters who have been awful to her in 2008… and, she names then by Blog Name. I loved it!
So, there are no popcorn ratings because there was no movie. But, in case you can’t cut and past the popcorn because it’s a .png file, here’s a .jpg version:
Carrie from Books & Movies has posted an awesome review of Kevin Costner in Swing Vote (really want to see it). You can click on her “Mr. Linky” entry that I put in for her below. It’s a great review and you’ll love her site if you don’t know her already!
If you posted in today’s Monday’s Movie, please sign into Mr. Linky and leave a comment below.

Another Kate Winslet fan checking in. I started watching the awards, then got distracted, but it’s on DVR for viewing later (without commercials – yay!)

Thanks for the recap. Slum Dog Millionaire is based on the book Q&A: A Novel. The movie seems to have come out of nowhere and exploded. NPR did a great story about this movie.
