The Sunday Salon 2009… I’ve Been A Good Girl This Year
So far, I’ve been a VERY good girl in 2009… how about you? I wonder if I can continue the streak? This week was a long one, productive one and, suprisingly, a restful one. Next week, my agenda’s packed and I’m loaded for bear!
The Sunday Salon: Week in Review AND Up n’ Coming Events…
I read and reviewed Breathing Out the Ghost by Kirk Curnutt. For TLC Book Tours, my post including an author interview and signed-book giveaway will appear on January 21st, 2009. I have been reading and will most likely it will take me some time to finish, The Bible Illuminated: The Book New Testament. I’m just about finished up with the chapter of Luke and getting ready to start on John. The one thing that I’m enjoying about reading the gospels is getting fed the same parables over and over again… to engrain them into my mind and help me to remember God’s word.
Another book that I started reading this week was a loaner from my friend, Michelle. It is the New York Times Bestseller Hypocrite in a White Pouffy Dressby Susan Jane Gilman. This book has some parts in it that are just insanely hysterical. The Mick Jagger sequence is hillarious as is the entire decision between Judiasm and Christianity. In any event, I’m 1/2 way done and starting on Recovering Charles next.
In my mailbox for revew…
Nothing came in the mailbox from a publisher… but, from Amazon.com came:
- Atonement by Ian McEwan (yippeee… I watched the movie… so I can read this for Lit Flicks Challenge)
- The Reader by Bernhard Schlink (want to see the movie)
And, from my friend Julie to read:
- A Total Waste of Makeup by Kim Gruenenfelder
For my contests & challenges…
Ti of Book Chatter & Other Stuff won this past week’s Thursday’s Thoughts : New Year’s Day Edition! This week’s Thursday’s Thoughts is “That One Question: If you could ask that one famous Hollywood Star ONE question… what would it be?”
Also, RedLady’s Reading Room is giving away The Flavor Bible that I really want to win and don’t want you to enter so that I have more chances at winning. But, in all fairness, I thought I’d share about it anyway because it looks AWESOME!
AND… DRUM ROLL PLEASE… The Just For the Love of It Reading Challenge is up and running! My biggest thanks to my fellow bloggers who are doing the challenge with me… it means so much. It’s kinda scary writing up a challenge and hoping that people will join you and support your site, you know? I’m not the big, popular blog… and, when I see that I’ve got some reader friends out there who are willing to join in and read and post with me… it just makes this all worth it! Thanks, you guys! And, if you haven’t signed up… you still can and feel free to do so ANY TIME! I’d be thrilled and privileged.
Movie Reviews…
This week, I reviewed Marley & Me. This prompted me to meet other doggie lovers and see the coolest pictures of their pets. This all led me to a post yesterday about the love for our doggies. The Friendly Book Nook is running a contest right now with a Marley & Me giveaway.
Please remember: THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF A NEW MEME! SO, PLEASE JOIN IN! Some of you are doing TV movies, classic movies, rental movies and big-screen movies. ANYTHING WORKS! Just any old movie will do! The only thing that I respectfully ask is that you use the Monday’s Movie logo (side), you post it on Monday, and that you rate the movie out of FIVE BAGS OF POPCORN. I have pictures of the bags of popcorn at the bottom of the post that you can copy from or you can use your own. You can do one a week, one a month… or one whenever… just join in, you movie lovers! Tomorrow you can read my review of a PayPerView Pick: Made of Honor with Patrick Dempsey.
At home…
New Year’s Day came and went. I had the most gnarly migraine headache and 1/2 of my body went numb for two days. It blew. But, I kept on truckin’, went to my P/T job, and got chores done. And, because I didn’t want to have to face Shana again on the closet not being clean, I enlisted the twins’ help. It gone done in one night. I actually feel much better knowing where all of my clothes and shoes are. It makes me feel more “ready to face the world.”
The twins have been behaving somewhat better this week, I think. That is, except for the fight they broke out in square in the center of Mother’s Market last night. So much for a nice wholesome, family meal and evening out. The twins have been suffering from puberty. Last night, while they bickered in the aisles of Mother’s, I was fastidiously reading labels on the best “teen acne” treatments. Crash! “Clean Up in Cosmetics,” over the speaker. Great, just great. I can’t take them ANYWHERE! Being a life-long acne sufferer, I know what works and what doesn’t. And, I’m not a fan of ProActiv. So, I eventually found some stuff that is natural and hopefully safe and effective. The cost was reasonble as well. When we got home, last night was the lesson on skin care basics and the important of clay masks to remove impurities and bacteria. We were all cruisin’ around with Mint Julep bright green masks on last night. Very attractive!
I got a mani-pedi with eyebrow wax today. I was in dire need… I was like Matilda the bush-woman. The color on my fingers and toes is a dark, metallic shade of purple that matches the perfect midnight sky. It’s my “Goth” look. Do you think the pretty silver and white “flowwwers” on my ring finger ruin my GOTH image? Hope not! But, the nail salon felt worlds away from the twin terrors and it was nice to read uninterrupted. But, while trying to read, my mind got away with me. I’ve had this man on my mind for a while… one that I’m no longer with but haven’t quite gotten over completely (the “love of my life” and the “one who got away”). We talked recently and it’s just like this huge scab has be picked off and I’m just bleeding pain all over the damn place. So, I started to cry at Happy Nails. Poor Mili just didn’t know what to do with my outpouring of emotion. Moments later, I got lots of hugs from my Vietnamese Posse at the salon and I didn’t understand a word that any of them were saying. But, I did get that they didn’t like their “Sherdi” sad. Some of them even gave me their cell phone numbers, not that we could have a serious girl-to-girl chat due to the language barriers. But, nonetheless, the “you have my cell number, now… call any time,” was very sweet, indeed. BTW: Star Simplified wrote the most beautiful post this week that so closely resembled my feelings for him that I bawled then, too. You should read it (don’t worry, you probably won’t bawl).
Well, off to finish up Pouffy Dress and another chapter in the New Testament. I hope that you all have a rockin’ Sunday filled with love, rest and prayer. The twins have a basketball game today and I’m off to church.
Have a great week, Saloners!
P.S. This picture is for Amanda… my new BlogFriend!
Her site is called Priceless Pearls and it would be great if you could stop by and welcome her to the book review blogsphere! Oh, and I have another new BlogFriend, Molly at My Cozy Book Nook. She’s fairly new, too! You’d really enjoy her blog as well!

I sure hope you are feeling better – Migraines stink! You sound like a very good mom. I would have loved it if my mom had done mud/clay masks with me. That’s so sweet that the salon ladies were caring for you!
I’m also stopping by to let you know that I tagged you for a meme. Here’s the link:

WOW — I feel like I could write a novel here, but I will try to keep it to a short and sweet comment
First of all, I saw Marley and Me last night. I started crying when they went to pick out the puppy (reminded me of our 3 litters — how I miss them so) and I didn’t stop until after I got home and hugged my own dear, sweet puppies. If I were ever going to write a book (which I am quite sure will never happen), I would write on the topic of learning about Unconditional Love by observing our dogs.
Second – thank you so much for the introduction to fellow bloggers. I hope I can maintain a blog that is worthy of following for an entire year.
and Third — I am so sorry that you have had a rough week. You have a GREAT writing style of infusing some humor in even the toughest situations, but I can tell that the pain is still there. I have not experienced many of the challenges you have (single mom of twin girls!!), but I do listen fairly well. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on – or someone to listen while you vent, I am available. You know my email address
Have a GREAT Sunday!

Okay, you’ve been busy, woman! The new nails sound gorgeous!
If it helps, my daughter is almost 15 and she’s on the downhill side of the worst part of puberty. Hang in there, Sher. It does pass!
Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress sounds like one I’d love. It’s going on my wish list …

Thanks for the comments, gals! The week wasn’t really that tough… migrane is gone and fleeting moments of sadness over a dude are gone! The twins, however, are an entirely different story. Shana, thanks for letting me know that this, too, shall pass!
Hugs to all!
Sheri

HI Sheri!
Yes both my girls will be at church tonight! It’s Big Sunday (dinner- over at 8pm)
I’m sorry you were sad about what’s-his-name. I have been where you are and know the embarrassment of crying in public. Also know the pain of migraines as they are a monthly occurrence for me. Tomorrow will be better, no doubt about it!
