I invite everybody to participate in the weekly MEME and write about any movies, television or big screen, that you’ve seen over the past week and write about it.  Please feel free to use the above logo photo in your post and/or link back to the site.  I will post every Sunday Night or Monday Morning on the movie I’ve seen from the past week.  I’m hoping that there are other movie buffs out there who will enjoy the MEME as much as I’m hoping to!  The only small request that I have is that you rate the movie out of 5 bags of popcorn (so, 1 bag out of 5, 2 bags out of 5, and so on).

Movie:  Marley & Me

Starring:  Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Adaptation and Biopic

Runtime: 2 Hours 3 Minutes

MPAA Rating:  PG

Directed By:  David Frankel

I loved this book.  I wept when I read it and just thought the world of it.  Of course, I am the world’s biggest animal lover and the proud owner of Tori, the sweetest blonde bombshell of a yellow lab ever to grace the planet!  She’s honestly just the best dog EVER…. unlike Marley the best WORST dog that ever lived.  I could not wait to see it and proudly Fandango’d my tickets so that we were assured entry on Christmas Day.   The twins and I dressed up warm and scuttled out for the early evening show.

Sadly, I got a bit of theatre rage because there were, of course, those people who were holding an entire row of seats for people who are supposedly coming, but who are not there yet.  (Oh, and surprise, surprise… they never did make it and the people now have 4 of the best seats in the house for their jackets!  Merry Christmas.)  So, the only seats left, 20 minutes prior  to showtime, are in the front row.  This seemingly didn’t bother the kids at all and we separated: them in the front and me almost 1/2 way up.  I sat next to a relatively ill-mannered child and his mother who tossed her entire bucket of popcorn on the dude in the seat directly in front of her.  Then, she proceeded to tell the guy to “lighten up” because after all it’s “New Year’s Eve for Christ’s sake.”  OKAY-DOUGHKAY, SWEETHEART!  So… I’m sandwiched between the kid who keeps staring at me and plunking his elbow on my drink and the guy who just ate Christmas dinner and is burping up what smelled like some type of red beef flavored with a ton of garlic.  Ugh.  So much for my magical movie day.   But, it’s Marley and Me… I’m going to love it!

marley-with-jen-and-owenI had a lot of trouble focusing on the movie because that kid next to me was driving me INSANE the entire movie.  He just kept staring at me and staring at me… his little round face reflecting the glow of the movie screen.  I gave him my scary face, but nothing doing… he was not intimidated by me in the least.  I was stuck… no more seats left, not even in the front row.

Oh, yeah… the movie was good.  As I had read the book, I knew what to expect.  I didn’t remember certain elements of the movie that must have been in the book.  For example, I didn’t remember their careers being so instrumental in the book, but it has been such a long time since I read it.   I remember more funny antics out of Marley in the book that I didn’t seem to get enough of in the movie.  Perhaps they’d already put as much as they could in with a 2 hour runtime as it was.  But, I wanted MORE DOGGIE!  Like, when they see Marley’s Dad at the breeder’s.. that monstorous dog who kept running forever.  You just have to love it that they picked “the Clearance Puppy.”

My favorite scene is when Jen Grogan (Aniston) comes home after experiencing her miscarraige and John Grogan (Wilson) walks back into the living room to be with his wife and she is crying… Marley has quietly placed his head on her knee.  It was very endearing to see a woman’s best friend on-screen… or, at least for me.  When I feel horrible, my dog Tori is all that I ever need for a good cry.  I also liked the scene when Marley was up to his late-night, never-ending food frenzy and toilet-water drinking duty.  Just as he finishes up, he sits at Jen’s bedside just before she wakes up in labor with Patrick.  Very cute… dogs just sense these things.   OH… and LOVE Jen dancing with Marley.

untitledAlan Arkin was endearing as Grogan’s boss and Eric Dane is as handsome as ever, although I don’t like his womanizing, “man on the move” character.  Boring!  He’s just entirely too handsome to be wasted on that “player” type… for me, that is!  Aniston is always so pretty and she looked great on-screen!  My friend, Jill, told me that it’s yoga that gives her that great shape.  I guess I’m going to have to sign up for yoga!  In any event, Aniston did just a lovely job and played the character “Jen” perfectly… just as it should have been played.  The casting of Owen Wilson as John Grogan… I’m not sure that I would have casted him for the part.  Truthfully, I think his brother Luke would have been a better typecast for the role.  In my mind, I pictured more of a mousy, brunette dude to play John Grogan.  But, Owen did fine and I always enjoy him.  The cast of “Marleys” were great.  I don’t know what happened to Kathleen Turner, but she looked awful…. perhaps that was intended… ???

Like every good book that has a movie, the book was far and beyond better than the movie.  However, for a good family film… especially for dog lovers… I highly recommend it!  Out of 5 bags of popcorn, genre comedy/drama… I give this:

Oh, and don’t forget the hankies… you will shed a tear if you have any heart at all…

  • Did you hear about the guy who shot someone who was talking in a movie theater in Philly?
Seriously, though, it’s why I try to avoid the busy times….people just don’t know how to behave!!!

  • i had not heard about that. did the guy live? that’s horrible!

  • For once I didn’t see a movie over the holiday weekend. Our tradition fell by the wayside this year.

  • Hi Sheri, I’m looking forward to seeing this movie. I haven’t read the book… we are new to the dog loving world (5 mo. old labradoodle – who is being a bit of a BAD Dog today :) now can’t wait to see movie. My 12 yr old (the one who is Jane Eyre obsessed) is insisting that at least she read the book first… I’m coming up with a counterpoint that with some books, it’s okay to just go ahead and see the dag gone movie, even if your first grade teacher exhorted you never to do this. I’m not a huge fan of Wilson or Aniston, but they both are likable enough. Every since I heard that story about the guy getting shot in Phildelphia at the movies, I can’t help but wonder who might be “packing heat.” Very sad story! I’m concerned for the future of that round faced kid sitting next to you. Great review, can’t wait to see it!

  • I read this book when it first came out and absolutely LOVED it! I could only read about 2 chapters at one time, however, because I was crying so hard I couldn’t see the words. My family is very upset with me because I intentionally have not finished the book; I know how it ends and I just can’t face it.

While I am sure Tori is the best female yellow lab in the world, I am quite certain that my 5 year-old yellow lab, Ralfie, is the best male lab :)

I liked reading your review and am anxious to see the movie – when the holiday crowds have subsided just a wee bit.

  • We were going to take the kids to watch this movie on Christmas, but then thought better of it. I think the themes would be a little too old for our kids, and I know they couldn’t handle Marley dying. We have a yellow lab that looks just like Marley, so I think it would hit too close to home.

They see the commercials and think “funny dog movie” and beg to see it, and if it was just a funny dog movie like Beethoven I would say yes. When they are older I’m sure they will enjoy it though.

  • Alyce,

Your kids are too young for this one, I think. But, if you love poochies… it’s good for you.

  • I saw Marley & Me a couple of days after Christmas, but it was more my sister’s kind of movie, and I preferred Benjamin Button, which I appreciate you linking to my review btw. I actually ordered the book for her for Christmas, before I found out it was going to be a movie, so hopefully she’ll still read it. Overall it was sweet, and I’d give it 3 bags of popcorn (but big bags).

  • I like this idea of yours! But I rarely get to go to the theater!! I hope to go the end of January though to see Inkheart!

Aside from that I do write about old movies on the tv now and then and wondered if those could be linked here or only “new movies”?? I was thinking of making my own “movie icon” for when I write about an old movie (black and white mostly) but use your popcorn rating system if that’s ok with you.. I don’t do these weekly, just now and then.. i hope it’s ok if I use the rating idea though.. let me know, I won’t do it if you don’t want !!

  • I really want to see this, but I want to read the book first. I loved John Grogan’s newest book, so I know Marley & Me is good. Thanks for the link.

  • I read the book Marley & Me and have to see the movie. Nona wants to watch it too.

  • Haven’t read the book but watched the movie last night. I agree with you, Sher, on the favorite scenes. And yes, Jen looked great, Owen Wilson looked better than usual and I liked him more than I expected to here.

My favorite LINE of the movie was when John and Sebastian were at the dog beach and they had finally caught Marley and were being berated by a much-too-serious dog owner for not keeping Marley on leash. Sebastian started laughing and the uptight dude said something like “What is it that you find so funny about this?” Sebastian responded “I’m just VERY immature.” God, I love that. As someone who often laughs at inappropriate times and gets *ahem* in trouble for it, I’m gonna have to borrow that line!!!

  • Hi Sheri, This was fun! I’ll try to participate as often as I can. I’m thinking about joining your new reading challenge, but I’m still learning how all this reading challenge business works. Thanks for everything!

  • I love your idea and I love your review! This is the stuff I want to hear about a movie. So sorry you had such a crappy seat though. People like that can really ruin your whole experience and for the money you spend, you want a really good experience! My mom and I read this book when it first came out and LOVED it! For Christmas I gave her a coupon to go to the movie with me. It’s not at our theater yet but it should be soon. I know I’ll cry through half the show. My mom has a huge golden retriever and so do we (not huge) along with a chocolate lab and a cocker spaniel. We are obviously animal lovers. Thanks for the great info. I can’t wait for your next one!

  • I seem to be having trouble commenting… here goes again (3rd time lol)

I am a first time visitor to your blog, and it looks so interesting… I have enjoyed it :)

I am yet to read the book, or see the movie (not showing in Australia yet). But can’t wait to see it, as my daughter and I are passionate dog lovers, especially labradors!

I live the sound of this movie meme. I did a post not so long ago about ‘Australia’, so too late for a movie meme on that one. Will keep this in mind for any future movies I see.

I am sorry to inform you ladies, that you are mistaken… I have the most beautiful lab ever to grace this planet… LOL… he is a big huggable baby doy named Darcy. No, I’m kidding. I love any lab, they are all so gorgeous, especially the pink nosed ones.

Do you have any photos of your baby? Would love to see one…
